ARTIST INTERVIEW

How did you become an artist and how did you get into collage?

I graduated in Geography and History and then I completed specialization courses in Art History and Plastic Arts. For several years I was linked to the field of education, so all artistic disciplines were always of interest to me.

With the collage in particular I started during a time of recovery from a disease, it was like a therapy, an exercise in meditation and distraction that occupied very pleasantly the hours in which my children were in school.

Now it has become a fundamental part of my life.

What are three things you like about working in collage?

Being such an open and free medium, the work itself becomes a medium of expression and communication, which allows me to show ideas, thoughts, circumstances, both those that arise in my mind or imagination, and those that come from the exterior in the form of a theme, news ...

The possibility of using a wide variety of materials. Within the collage practically everything has a place and that allows me to introduce different elements according to the needs of what I want to show at any moment. In the last series that I am doing, an important part of my work is accompanied by textiles and threads.

The great community of collage artists, who I meet directly, or through the internet, people from anywhere in the world from whom to learn and with whom to share interests and ideas.

What collage do you look at? What artists inspire you? Where do you seek out collage?

Although in my collages I am used to using few colors, cuttings from old black and white magazines, textiles in light tones ... I like to look at all kinds of collage, each one in its own style, everyone has something to say and I am always ready to learn from all of them.

There are many today, to name them would be to write a list that is too long. To cite one, I refer to the classics: John Stezaker, Diego Lara, Grete Stern, Conrad Marca-Relli, Kurt Schwitters, Juan Gris, Hanna Hoch ...

The fastest and most dynamic medium is the internet, but when I enjoy it the most is visiting collage exhibitions, in books or specialized magazines.

How do you interact with the collage community?

Mainly contact through social networks, especially instagram, also through websites or email.

I live in a small city in northern Spain, so when I move to other places I try to be in contact with the collage community directly.

What advice do you have for people just starting to collage (about making collage or connecting to the community)?

The most important thing is that they have fun making collage. Do not be afraid of making mistakes or of not obtaining the expected results in the first works. It is a very versatile medium so everyone must experiment and practice with different elements and ideas until they find their own style that will certainly come out. Also sharing ideas and collaborating with other artists is very rewarding.

How do you share your work? Are you affiliated with a gallery? Do you make books? How can people see more of or follow your artwork?

Mainly through social networks and the website.

When I can send works to participate in group exhibitions, collaborations with other artists or groups.

I have several publications in collage magazines and yes I would like to publish a book on collage later.
